Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light (laser) to remove unwanted hair. It prevents hair growth by destroying the hair follicle straight from the root. Practitioners/technicians will treat the desired area with pulses of light distributed over the skin that target the melanin in the hair follicle. The melanin found in the hair follicle absorbs the light emitted from the laser and the energy heats and damages the follicle. By heating and damaging thefollicle, the laser energy stunts the cells that stimulate hair regrowth.

Treatments are usually painless but will vary from patient to patient. Depending on the clients pain tolerance the feeling can be described as a range of sensations during treatment from tingling to the snapping of a rubber band against your skin. You may experience mild discomfort after the procedure, such as redness and irritation.

How painful the procedure is depends on the part of the body thatʼs undergoing laser hair removal. The more sensitive the skin is and less skin tissue, the more painful it will likely be.

Treatments can take anywhere from just 5 to approximately 90 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. Treating a small area, such as the upper lip, might take only a few minutes. Treating a larger area, such as the back, might take more than an hour.

For each treatment you’ll wear special goggles to protect your eyes from the laser beam. The practitioner will clean and shave the treated again if necessary. Then an ultrasound gel will be applied to the skin to reduce discomfort and allow for smooth laser-skin contact. After the procedure, you might notice redness and swelling for the first few hours after laser hair removal, this is normal. To reduce any discomfort, apply ice to the treated area.
